| Born in Baghdad Iraq in 1944, Massoudy became an apprentice calligrapher as a young man. He rigorously pursued his goal to become a calligrapher for many years before moving to Paris in 1969, where he continued his artistic studies eventually receiving a diploma from the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Today, Massoudy continues to live and work in Paris, having established himself as one of the most gifted interpreters of the diversity and range of the calligrapher’s art. Massoudy can be credited with introducing the wonders of contemporary Arabic calligraphy to a growing audience in the francophone world. His many publications include an impressive series of beautifully illustrated publications, collections of diverse texts and poetic translations. A fine writer himself, Massoudy is at his most eloquent when describing his enduring passion for the written word; “Calligraphy becomes a language of the body, explaining what surges inexplicably from deep within the writer…The calligrapher must guide and direct these sparks of life. I should like my letters to dance across the white page. I translate what I feel into gestures, and suddenly my reverie is visible. In creative moments, everything is illuminated.” Massoudy’s vivid intepretations, in the Arabic script, of quotations from great writers and thinkers of the western canon make him a two-way bridge between the different worlds he inhabits. In 2007, Massoudy's work was the main feature in 'Word into Art; Artists of the Modern Middle East' at the British Museum and received extensive media exposure as well as critical acclaim enhancing the value of his art as a vehicle for investment. view less | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
